Hierarchies
Hierarchies let you group products together for better discovery and catalog management.
PIM is now called Products
Some of fabric's products are undergoing name changes. PIM is becoming Products, but you may see the old name in some places as we make the transition.
Hierarchies
The Primary hierarchy is the anchoring object that defines the organizational structure of a catalog. An Alternative hierarchy represents various merchandising objectives such as organizational requirements, multi-regional assortments, multi-channel assortments, collections, using separate browsing structures.
Attribute inheritance
The role of the primary hierarchy is to let merchants segregate items in categories and subcategories. For example, if the hierarchy for couches is Furniture > Living Room > Sofas, you can add attributes to each of these categories. The subcategories will inherit these attributes. For example, a “Brand” attribute added to the Furniture category will be inherited by Living Room and Sofas.
Primary Hierarchy
The primary hierarchy enables merchants to create a tree structure of categories and subcategories to segregate products. Every item must belong to one category/subcategory. There is no limit to the number of categories or subcategories in the primary hierarchy.
Create primary hierarchy
Navigate to Hierarchies and click Primary.
Click the + circle in the bottom of the vertical menu.
Add aTitle to the empty category.
Click Enter/Return and the category will be created.
Click the newly-created Category name to add subcategories. A new level will appear to the right of the selected category.
Repeat the steps above for each the new category and subcategory.
NOTE: For first-time Products users, a blank screen appears with a single empty category.
Add hierarchy attributes to a primary hierarchy
To add hierarchy attributes that are relevant to all categories in the category tree, you can add hierarchy attributes at level 0.
Click the vertical ellipsis (⋮) near the LEVEL: 0 icon and select Hierarchy Attributes.
In the Hierarchy Attributes box on the right, click the + sign to add one or more attributes to the selected hierarchy.
Click Save.
NOTE: These attributes are inherited by each category and subcategory of the hierarchy. You need to assign the value for these attributes separately for each category.
Add hierarchy attributes for subcategory
If there are attributes that are relevant only for a particular category, they can be added specifically to that category.
Click the vertical ellipsis (⋮) next to the name of the category you want to edit.
Select Hierarchy Attributes.
In the Hierarchy attributes section, click the Add hierarchy attributes line and select the attribute(s) to add to the subcategory.
Click Save.
Add item attributes to a category
Adding item attributes to a category and subcategories is required to create items. If a category is missing item attributes, no item can be created for that category.
Click the vertical ellipsis (⋮) next to the name of the category you want to edit.
Select Item Attributes.
In the Item Attributes section, click the Add Item Attributes line and select the attribute(s) to add to the subcategory.
Click Save.
NOTE: System Mandatory Attributes are separated for each category for easier management. These attributes are shown by default but need to be saved in order to be added to the primary hierarchy. Click the vertical ellipsis (⋮) to make attributes mandatory for the category and all of its subcategories. Attributes added to a category are inherited from the category to all of its subcategories. Click Save when completed.

Alternate Hierarchies
Products enables one or more alternate hierarchies to support different business use cases such as the grouping of items for marketing purposes, promotions, or warehousing organization. Categories of an alternate hierarchy are dynamic and populated from the primary hierarchy which is the original source of items.

Click the any category name to add subcategories. A new level will appear to the right of the selected category.

NOTE: You can also create categories by dragging and dropping from the primary hierarchy. When a category is created using drag and drop, all subcategories are created with it.
Add hierarchy attributes
Any category of the hierarchy can be assigned attributes. Subcategories will inherit the attributes of the parents.
To assign attributes at any level , click the vertical ellipsis (⋮) icon and select Hierarchy attributes.
In the Hierarchy attributes dialog box to the right, add one or more attributes by clicking the + sign and checking the relevant boxes.
NOTE: Attributes added at Level: 0 will be inherited by all subcategories. Attributes added to any other categories not at Level: 0 will only apply to that subcategory.
Manage category items
Any new item created in the primary hierarchy automatically populates in the alternate hierarchies. The rules and conditions of this inheritance are determined by Sources, Source Exclusions, and Attribute conditions.
To configure these inheritance rules, click the vertical ellipsis (⋮) icon for any subcategory in the Alternate hierarchies section and select Manage category.
Sources, Source Exclusions, and Attribute conditions.
- Sources: These are categories (nodes) of the primary hierarchy that provide a list of items to be inherited by a category of an alternate hierarchy. Only items that belong to this list can be part of the destination subcategory of an alternate hierarchy. You can add sources to any subcategory in an alternate hierarchy. Sources are inherited by the subcategories as well.
- Source Exclusions: These are exclusions of the sources applied on a particular category of an alternate hierarchy. Users can restrict items added to a subcategory by applying exclusions to every source it has added or inherited from its parent category. Source exclusions are inherited from categories to their subcategories
- Attribute Conditions: These are filters on the list of items inherited by subcategories from sources. Conditions can be configured for each attribute based on the type of the attribute. Attribute conditions are inherited from parent category to subcategories
All the items that match the criteria of source, source filters, and attribute conditions will be added to the subcategory.
Click Save.
